Can You Do CrossFit While Being Pregnant?

The Crossfit movement has always been targeted with negative media feedback. With claims of people being rushed to the ER with over exhaustion to broken bones from poor form while lifting ridiculously heavy weights.

Doing Crossfit while pregnant seems like an abomination right?

What is Crossfit?
The CrossFit prescription is performing ‘functional movements that are constantly varied at high intensity.’ CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program. The CrossFit program is designed to elicit as broad an adaptational response as possible. CrossFit is not a specialised fitness program but a deliberate attempt to optimise physical competence.

With its common misconception, it's no wonder pregnancy and Crossfit have been butting heads in the media as of late. However, CrossFit programming is meant to be scaled and suitable for all ages and physical conditions including pregnancy. Pregnant woman, in general are more in tune with how their bodies are responding to certain physical movements. The idea behind doing Crossfit while pregnant is to listen to your body. It is a total misconception for mum’s not to exercise during pregnancy. Mum’s who have been doing Crossfit for a while, have no reason to stop their workouts.
Woman who exercise during pregnancy have reduced weight gain and fat deposition as well as increasing physical and emotional recovery from delivery. Mum’s who exercise during pregnancy tend to have easier, shorter and less complicated labors with less need for pain relief.
Babies of exercising mums have significant lower heart rates than babies of non-exercising mums. These babies are generally more healthier and leaner at birth and tend to stay lean during their childhood. Crossfit mums have reported their babies sleep through the night sooner and are able to self-calm much quicker.

If you are pregnant and have never done Crossfit before, firstly always consult your health care professional and let them know your intentions. Secondly we’d recommend you go to a Crossfit Box (gym) that has a ‘Crossfit Mums’ program. These boxes will not only know exactly what scaled movement is best for you, they will keep a very close trained eye on you as you stay strong and fit while still looking after your baby bump.
One of the biggest problems with commercial gyms is the lack of training and knowledge passed on to the client. Teaching correct form and technique from day one and educating all members on how to perform every movement they encounter in the CrossFit environment can mean the difference between an injury and a forever healthy and limber athlete.
There are many great Crossfit Boxes across Australia that cater just for mums and mums to be.
